The short answer
Most artificial turf installs in Southwest Florida run $9–$15 per square foot, depending on the turf you choose and what your site needs underneath it. That range covers the full install, not just the grass. Your exact price comes only from a free onsite measurement — one written number, not an estimate that grows later.
What the $9–$15 range actually covers
That is an installed price, not a material price. A real install is a construction project in layers: the old grass and soil come out, a compacted base goes in, a woven weed barrier goes on top of that base, the turf is seamed and glued to a poured concrete border, infill is brushed in, and the old material is hauled away.
When you see turf advertised online at a low per-square-foot price, you are looking at the grass alone — no excavation, no base, no seams, no border, no drainage design, no haul-away. The gap between a material price and an installed price is not markup games. It is the work that decides whether the yard still looks right in year five.
What moves your price inside the range
The product you choose. Turf is not one thing. Products differ in face weight — the weight of yarn above the backing, which is the honest measure of how much grass is actually in the grass — in total weight, pile height, blade shape, and backing type. A denser, heavier product with an engineered backing costs more than a sparse entry product, and in a high-traffic Florida yard that difference is what you are paying for. AJ Turf quotes both the face weight and the total weight on every product, always, so you can compare spec for spec.
What is under it. Our standard build digs about 2–3 inches below the sod line, then builds a screening-sand base — roughly 1 ton per 100 square feet finished, with a minimum 2-inch compacted layer — compacted to 95% Standard Proctor (ASTM D698), following Synthetic Turf Council guidance. Crushed gravel is used only where a job needs feet of fill depth, and it is always capped with screening sand. A flat lot that needs drainage designed in, a yard with difficult access, or a site that needs deep fill will sit higher in the range than a simple, well-draining rectangle.
The perimeter and the seams. Every AJ Turf install gets a 3×3×3-inch poured concrete border, and the turf edges are glued to it with turf glue carrying a 15-year warranty. Nails and spikes are used only underneath — to secure the weed barrier and seam tape — and never go through the turf itself. That border is real concrete work, and it is a line item cheap quotes quietly skip by spiking the edges into sand instead.

Florida note
Southwest Florida yards sit on sand over limestone, and a lot of them — Cape Coral especially — are flat enough that drainage has to be designed, not assumed. Canal and waterfront lots also carry a 10-foot setback from the water under Florida's statewide synthetic turf standard. Our installs are built around Florida's statewide synthetic turf standard (Rule 62-308.100) — including that setback, no in-ground irrigation on turf areas, and a drainage-first base system. A quote that never mentions drainage, setbacks, or your HOA is a quote that has not actually looked at your yard yet. We serve Fort Myers, Cape Coral, Naples, Estero, Bonita Springs, Sanibel, and Lehigh Acres.
The honest downside Artificial turf is not cheap, and the $9–$15 range is real money — for most yards, a five-figure project. The deposit structure is also a real commitment: 30% to schedule, and deposits are always non-refundable. And the low end of the range is not a lesser version of the high end — it is a different product and a different site. If your yard needs drainage work or deep fill, no honest installer can put you at $9, and anyone who promises the floor price before seeing the yard is planning to find the difference somewhere else.
The gotcha The classic bait is density. You are shown — and pay for — a premium, heavy turf, and a lighter, sparser one gets installed. You cannot tell the difference with your eyes on day one; sparse turf only confesses later, when you can see black backing between the stitch rows. The second bait is a quote that lists only total weight: a heavy backing can make a sparse turf "weigh" like a dense one. Defend yourself the same way on every quote: face weight AND total weight, the exact product named, and verify the product on the truck against the quote before it goes down.
How AJ Turf handles this
We do not quote exact prices from photos, texts, or square-footage guesses, because that is exactly how homeowners end up with a number that changes on install day. We come out, measure, look at drainage, access, and edges, show you the actual product, and give you one exact written price. The quote names the product with both its face weight and its total weight, states the manufacturer's warranty for that product — 8, 16, or 25 years depending on the product, covering UV stability and strength only — plus our 1-year labor warranty, and stages payments 30/35/35. If you have an HOA, we prepare and submit the application for you. No pressure in the yard: the price is the price, in writing.
Questions people ask.
Is the $9–$15 per square foot just for the turf itself?
No. That range is the installed price — excavation, compacted screening-sand base, woven weed barrier, turf, seams, the poured concrete border the edges are glued to, infill, and haul-away. Turf sold by itself online is a material price, and comparing it to an installed quote leaves out most of the project.
Why can't you give me an exact price over the phone?
Because the exact price depends on things a photo cannot show: how your lot drains, how much fill it needs, access for material, and how much perimeter and seam work the layout takes. We give the honest range by phone and the exact number after a free onsite measurement — in writing, before you commit to anything beyond that visit.
How are payments staged, and is the deposit refundable?
Payments run 30% to schedule, 35% on the first day on site, and 35% on completion and walkthrough. Deposits are always non-refundable — that is stated up front, before you sign, not buried in the paperwork afterward.
Is there a minimum yard size for an install?
Yes — installs start at 1,000 square feet. Repair work is different: repairs start with a free onsite assessment and have no minimum job size.
