AJ Turf / Turf Guide / Buying turf

Why do artificial turf quotes for the same yard differ so much?

The short answer

Two quotes for the same yard usually differ because they're not quoting the same job. The gap comes from the base (how deep, what material, how well compacted), how the edges are held (spikes vs a glued concrete border), the product (its face weight, not just its total weight), and whether anyone measured the yard. Most installs in Southwest Florida run $9 to $15 a square foot, depending on the turf and the site.

The short version

What changes the price Why it matters
The base Dig depth, base material and compaction decide whether the lawn stays flat and drains. It's also where cheap quotes cut first
The edges Spikes are fast and cheap; a poured concrete border with glued edges is extra material and labor that holds for years
The product Face weight (the yarn you walk on) is the real density. A heavier total weight can hide a thin face
Size and shape Turf comes in 15-foot rolls, so the yard's shape decides how much gets cut away
Access and demolition Tight side yards, old turf to remove, or pavers in the way all add labor
Who measured A price given without seeing the yard is a guess, and guesses get "adjusted" later

Where do cheap quotes save money?

Almost never on the turf you can see. The savings come from what ends up underneath and around it: a thin base or one that isn't compacted, spikes instead of a border, a cheap pressed weed barrier, plain silica in a dog run, and no time spent planning seams. None of it shows on install day, but it shows by the second summer as dips, wrinkles, lifting edges and smell.

How do I compare two quotes fairly?

Put them side by side and check that each one names:

  1. The product, with both weights: face weight and total weight. A quote that shows only total weight is hiding the comparison, because a heavy backing makes sparse turf weigh like dense turf.
  2. The base: what goes in, how deep, and how it's compacted.
  3. The edges: spikes, or a border the turf is glued to.
  4. The infill: what it is and how much, especially for pets.
  5. The warranty: whose it is, and a copy of the actual document.
  6. The payment schedule: money should follow the work.

When the product shows up on install day, check it against the quote. Sparse turf shows dark backing between the stitch rows.

Florida note

In Southwest Florida, canal-front lots need the state's 10-foot waterbody setback worked into the design, and a visible front yard may need an HOA application before work starts. A quote that ignores either one can change after you sign. Both should come up at the estimate, not after.

The honest downside A properly built install costs more than a spike-down job, openly: the border, the base work and the better barrier are real material and labor. And the cheapest quote isn't always wrong, sometimes a yard really is simple. The point isn't to pay the most. It's to know what you're paying for, line by line, before you sign.

The gotcha Manufacturer warranties exclude faulty installation and wear from an inadequate base. So the cheapest install can quietly cost you the warranty: when the turf fails because of what's underneath it, the product warranty doesn't pay.

How AJ Turf handles this

We measure every yard in person and give one exact written price, free. The quote names the product, the base and the border, and you'll see the exact warranty for your product before you sign. Payments follow the work: 30% to put the install on the schedule, 35% on the first day on site, and the last 35% when the job is done and you've walked it with us.

Questions people ask.

Why won't a good installer quote from a photo or satellite image?

Because the price depends on things a photo can't show: how the ground drains, what's buried, access, and the exact shape around beds and pavers. A remote number is a guess, and guesses tend to grow once work starts.

Is a higher face weight always better?

Not always. More yarn means a denser, fuller look and usually a higher price, but the right turf depends on how the area is used, pets, traffic and heat. What matters is that the quote shows the face weight, so you can compare like with like.

What should I do if a quote is much lower than the others?

Ask what's different: the base, the edges, the barrier, the infill, the product's face weight. Sometimes the answer is simple. Often it's one of the shortcuts that show up later.

How should payments be staged?

In stages tied to progress, not mostly up front. A deposit to schedule, a payment when work starts, and the final payment after you've walked the finished job is a common, fair shape.
