The short answer
In full summer sun, artificial turf gets much hotter than natural grass: University of Florida IFAS researchers measured turf reaching about 174°F on the hottest days, versus about 102°F for natural grass. Cooling infills, a quick rinse of water, shade and smart placement all help.
This is the honest downside of artificial turf in Florida, and it's worth planning for rather than ignoring.
What the measurements show
Researchers with the University of Florida's IFAS extension found artificial turf can reach about 79°C (174°F) on the hottest days, compared with about 39°C (102°F) for natural turf in the same conditions. Surfaces that hot can burn bare skin and paws quickly.
What makes it worse
Full afternoon sun with no shade, and sunlight reflected off windows or glass doors onto the turf. Reflected sunlight can be strong enough to melt turf fibers, which is something manufacturers warn about in their care guides.
Ways to cool it down
Cooling infill. Newer infills are designed to hold moisture and release it slowly, cooling the surface the way sweat cools skin. The maker of one, T°Cool, says it lowers surface temperatures by up to 50°F when the infill is hydrated. It works best when it's watered periodically.
Keep water handy. When we install, existing sprinkler heads are capped and left in place, not ripped out. A quick run of water over the turf, by sprinkler or hose, cools the surface fast before kids or pets head out.
Product choice. Turf fibers vary. We bring samples so you can compare how different products look and feel in your yard's light.
How to plan around it
Think about where the turf goes and when it gets used. Shaded areas, east-facing yards and spots under trees or lanai screens stay more comfortable. For pets, keep a shaded or covered area available in midday heat.
Why we bring it up
We'd rather you hear it from us at the estimate than discover it in July. We'll look at sun exposure, bring samples, and talk through placement before you decide.
